Posted May 1, 2006

Division Two sides Bowling Old Lane and Brighouse both pulled off shock results to defeat Division One opponents Farsley and Gomersal respectively.

Bowlers Mick Wood (4-16) and Nigel Briggs (4-34) were the match-winners for Brighouse as they dismissed Gomersal for just 72 on their way to an easy seven-wicket success.

And Bowling Old Lane had Haqueq Siddique (3-18), Adil Mir (3-20) and Khalid Shah (3-20) to thank for bowling out Farsley for 98. Old Lane eased home by seven wickets with opener Nindy Singh making 34.

Holders Yeadon were made to fight hard for their five-run win over Second Division Spen Victoria. Veteran opener Les Wood made a determined 61 for Yeadon as they were dismissed for 181. John Ireland (2-14) was the pick of the bowlers.

Spen lost two early wickets but were revived by a tenancious innings of 60 from Leigh Manton. With Richard West making an unbeaten 36, Spen made a determined bid to match their rivals' score but were eventually restricted to 176 for eight.

Former fiurst team skipper Russell Heritahe stroked his way to match-winning 104 as Undercliffe defeated Manningham Mills by 160 runs. Teenage batsman Farakh Hussain underlined his promise by making 88 in a 150-run partnership with Heritage.

Mills had three players missing when the match resumed on Monday and they were dismissed for 136 despite an unbeaten half-century from opener Khizal Hayat and 49 from Qasim Shafiq.

Pudsey Congs piled on the runs against Morley. Openers Warren Allitt (89) and Phil Allinson (71) shared a stand of 153, before Steve Gunner (91no) and Paul Pointon (44no) added 129 in an unbroken third wicket stand which took Congs' score to 304 for two.

Morley struggled in reply with only Ashley Daly (33) making any real impression against the bowling of Michael Oldfield (4-21) and Ben Burkill (3-11). They were eventually all out for 130 to lose by 174 runs.

Lightcliffe bowler David Towell claimed four for 17 as he helped his side dismiss Bradford & Bingley for 90. Lightcliffe had little trouble passing that score for the loss of three wickets with opener Steven Hartley making 45.

The best bowling performance of the day came from Wasim Rafiq of Pudsey St Lawrence. He took seven for 49 in their eight-wicket win over Hartshead Moor. Rafiq ripped out the heart of the innings despite the efforts of Andrew Halford (46) and Phil Gooder (40no). Hartshead Moor were dismissed for 144.

Opener James Milligan made an unbeaten 69 to steer St Lawrence to a win which will boost morale after three successive Second Teams Division One defeats.

East Bierley's depleted side were still too good for struggling Cleckheaton. Opener Aaron Brook was East Bierley's star man hitting a six and 16 fours while making 80 out of their total of 148. Cleckheaton were dismissed for 121 with Daniel Abbott taking five for 20.

Woodlands had a resounding 1672-run win over Esholt. Keith Robson (44) and Richard Godfrey (36) were the main contributors to a total of 246 for nine. Esholt, who had two men missing when the game resumed on Monday, were dismissed for 84 with Michael Pearson taking three for 29.
