Brook hits an unbeaten ton as East Bierley triumph
Posted: August 6, 2006
Opener Arron Brook hit a sparkling unbeaten 144 as East Bierley defeated Bowling Old Lane by 132 runs in the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield final at Pudsey Congs.
Brook batted magnificently hitting three sixes and 19 fours in one of the finest innings seen in a Priestley Shield final.
His performance lit up the first ever final played in coloured clothing and ensured his team took the initiative from the start and never let go.
It was Brook's third century of the season and his highest individual score, His performance made the choice of selecting the man of the match an easy one for the Bradford League's Chief Executive Bob Shackleton.
Brook admitted afterwards to being "thrilled" by his innings which enabled East Bierley to rack up an impressive total of 278 for five batting first.

Captains Matthew Anderson and Haqueq Siddique meet up for the toss |
Bowling Old Lane will be kicking themselves for missing three opportunities to dismiss Brook. Shahid Alishan missed a chance at mid wicket when Brook had made 32, while wicketkeeper Mushtaq Bodiat fumbled a stumping attempt and a tight run out call was given not out.
Brook drove powerfully and pulled savagely when the Old Lane bowlers, as they did too often, strayed in length or line.
Brook also took advantage of Old Lane's bold approach. Their admirable attempt to retain attacking fields for as long as possible, was exploited by Brook.
Perhaps a more cautious approach might have helped Bowling Old Lane, but their desire to attack was far more refreshing than seeing the sterile sight of men being thrown onto the boundaries at the first hint of trouble.
Terry Staniforth (35), skipper Matthew Anderson (26) and paul Ellis (22mo) gave good support to Brook as Bowling Old Lane's bowlers were made to toil.
The big surprise was why skipper Hagueq Siddique did not bring opening bowler Talat Sajawal back for a second spell. He took two for 12 in six overs and looked the bowler most likely to pose problems.
Sajawal was on a hat-trick at one point after removing opener Gareth Davies to a brilliant slip catch by Siddique and trapping Matthew Mckirgan lbw first ball.
Opening bowler Haseeb Younis bore the brunt of the East Bierley assault as
he yielded 78 runs in his ten overs and took only one wicket .
Old Lane, the Second Team Division Two leaders, needed a good start if they were to mount a challenge to the daunting score, but they didn't get it. Skipper Siddique was trapped lbw by Chris Brook, while Shahid Alishan was run out for just five.
At 32 for two Old Lane were deep in trouble. Opener Khalid Rehman tried to turn the tide with a fine knock of 53, but after striking 11 fours he was run out after a mix up involving his 14-year-old son Fahid.
His departure sparked a sharp decline to 112 for seven and from that point there was only going to be one winner.
John Glover was the mnost successful East Bierley bowler with three for 22, while Paul Ellis recovered from an expensive first over to take two for 35.
Old Lane were eventually dismissed for 147 when Ghazanfar Rehman hit a delivery from Ellis tamely to skipper Matthew Anderson at mid off.
The wicket sparked East Bierley celebrations on an afternoon when they dominated the game from start to finish.
