First team review
It's six of the best for leaders Baildon
Posted: May 25, 2009

Division One

Baildon stretched their lead to 12 points after recording their sixth-straight win at Farsley by five wickets.

Left-arm spinner Mushtaq Ahmed took four for 19 in 15 overs as Baildon dismissed their opponents for 155 at Red Lane. Left armer Andy Walker (3-48) was also among the wickets as Farsley - without former Yorkshire batsman Ashley Metcalfe - struggled despite the efforts of skipper David Syers (32).

Baildon were guided towards their victory target by former Farsley batsman Naeem Ashraf. He made 61 and was supported by Simon Webb (42no) and Matthew Webb (30).

Second-placed Saltaire were involved in a dramatic finish. Their game with Bradford & Bingley finished in a tie. Bradford & Bingley, who lost 20 overs from their innings because of rain, needed 11 from the final over to overhaul Saltaire's 154 all out, but managed only ten.

Chris Thompson was the man who set up the exciting finish with a blistering innings of 59 from 50 balls. He struck three sixes and seven fours. Skipper Ijaz Khan, who bowled the final over, was Saltaire's most successful bowler with four for 35.

It proved to be a good day for the spinners at Roberts Park. Bradford & Bingley's Matthew Cockshott (4-25) was their leading wicket taker on a day when Yorkshire and England's Matthew Hoggard again spearheaded the attack. The tie enabled Bradford & Bingley to climb above East Bierley into fourth place.

Cleckheaton picked up a much-needed win and a maximum 20 points by beating Manningham Mills by 101 runs. It was Mills' sixth defeat in seven games and leaves them occupying one of the relegation positions - four points adrift of Farsley.

Mills had Cleckheaton in early trouble but some fine batting by Ian Nicholson (85) and Mark Cummins (79) transformed the situation as their side recovered to make a score of 225-7, despite the efforts of Adil Islam (3-46).

The Mills' batting crumbled as leg spinner Tom Pringle (5-15) and skipper John Wood (3-22) went to work. Only Nasser Jamal (34) and Zeeshan Qasim (34no) looked at ease.

The weather created frustration for Pudsey St Lawrence, Gomersal and East Bierley who were all well positioned to win.

St Lawrence could be forgiven for thinking that the weather is playing cruel tricks on them. Last Sunday they lost a Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup tie to Congs on a bowl out and again today 12 overs were lost to rain at a crucial time in the Congs' reply to their score of 228-5.

Teenage batsman Kassir Maroof (46no) Chris Marsden (35), Iain Priestley (33no), Mark Robertshaw (31) and Gareth Clough (30) all made useful contributions.

The Congs' innings had a similar pattern with Babar Butt (43), Matthew Doidge (41) and Uzair Mahomed (41) the main contributors as young Matthew Lumb again returned good figures of three for 13.

Woodlands were given a real scare by newly-promoted Gomersal. The champions had to cling on grimly with nine wickets down to avoid Gomersal claiming the victory in a match which was rain affected.

A welcome return to batting form from wicketkeeper Nicky Rushworth (43no) saved the day as Gomersal through Shahzaib Khan (3-18), Ben Platt (3-56), and Nasser Hussain (3-46) came close to inflicting a fourth defeat in five games on Woodlands, who finished on 168-9 in reply to a challenging Gomersal total of 2278.

Gomersal built their total around two fine knocks. Gulsheraz Ahmed made 63 and Richard Gould (56) in the face of some good bowling from Richard Spittlehouse (5-74).

Yeadon were also nine wickets down as they just managed to deny East Bierley a fifth straight win. Once again the East Bierley top order faltered before Scotland skipper Gavin Hamilton and captain Paul Hutchison came to the rescue. Hamilton hit nine fours in his 68, while Hutchison hit a six and eight fours in a breezy 48 not out. Yeadon skipper Grant Soames, playing against his old club, took four for 39, while New Zealander Tom Johnston took three for 53.

Hamilton and Hutchison took East Bierley's total to 197 all out. Their bid to force victory was hampered by the loss of 13 overs to rain. Yeadon finished on 126-9

Division Two

There's just no stopping Bankfoot. They secured their seventh win in seven games as they brushed aside Great Horton by 171 runs. Marcus Walmsley (4-20) and Greg Colehan (3-8) skittled out Great Horton for 51. Bankfoot had earlier made 222-8 with skipper Robert Ellis (34), Micky Hutchins (33) and Nigel Hanson (30no) all chipping in.

Bankfoot have a 23-point lead over Windhill who jumped above Hartshead Moor in their rain -affected match. Mohammad Altaf (91), Neil Johnson (60) and Josh Wheatley (42) guided Windhill to an impressive total of 261-5. Hartshead Moor, who have been batting well, faltered against the fine bowling of Craig Wiseman (5-22) and finished on 104-9, just depriving Windhill the win and earning themselves two extra points.

Hartshead Moor dropped from second to fourth as a result of their defeat. Undercliffe, who beat Spen by 29 runs edged above them.

Yorkshire's Chris Taylor (53) and Ben Heritage (43) helped Undercliffe to a score of 178-8, before in-form left-arm spinner Chris Greenwood took six for 39 to dismiss Spen with two balls to spare. Tosh Baker provided the bulk of Spen's runs with a fine innings of 81.

Brighouse, still searching for a first win, secured a tie against Lightcliffe when Lightcliffe's last man Adil Ladak was caught and bowled by skipper Paul Cummins.

It was fitting that Cummins should have the last say because he top scored with 41 in the Brighouse innings of 159-8 and finished with three for 19 as Lightcliffe were dismissed for 159. Lightcliffe's top scorer was skipper Richard Nichols with 40.

There was a tense, low-scoring affair at Bowling Old Lane. The home side eventually edged home by two wickets against Keighley. Zubair Najeeb took four for 14 in 15 miserly overs as Keighley were dismissed for 78. Old Lane had their troubles with the bat took. Only a defiant 43 not out by skipper Amjad Khan saw them through to a two-wicket win.

the match between Morley and Idle was the only one in the division not to reach a positive conclusion. The rain break in the Idle innings which removed 12 overs was crucial.

Morley, still seeking that elusive first league win, made 150-9 with Dan Lloyd hitting 45, then Idle replied with 132-7. James Russell was the pick of the Morley bowler with four for 56.
