Division One

Champions Woodlands started as they mean to carry on by taking a maximum 20 points from their emphatic Division One win over a Cleckheaton side who beat them twice in the JCT 600 Bradford League last season.

Skipper Tim Orrell led from the front by striking 76 from 75 balls with two sixes and 12 fours as Woodlands made 227-9 batting first. Left-hander Chris Brice was the other main contributor with a knock of 51 which included a six and seven fours. Skipper John Wood (3-29) and new boy Mark Cummins (3-37) were the pick of the Cleckheaton bowlers.

When Cleckheaton replied they immediately plunged into deep trouble at 19-6 as the new-ball pairing of Pieter Swanepoel (4-20) and Richard Spittlehouse (4-29) made light of the absence of overseas player Safraz Ahmed. Only a defiant 59 from former Yorkshire player Neil Nicholson spared Cleckheaton from great humiliation. They were eventually dismissed for 108 leaving Woodlands sitting on top of the table after the first round of fixtures.

The opening day turned out to be a good day for the spin bowlers. Chris Marsden led the way with the day's best figures of six for 33 as Pudsey St Lawrence beat their newly-promoted rivals Farsley by 61 runs, and there were also fine performances from Harry Smallwood (Baildon), Ijaz Khan (Saltaire) and Glenn Roberts (Pudsey Congs)

Only acting-skipper Ashley Metcalfe (41) and Shabbir Rashid (31) made any impression as Farsley's weakened middle-order crumbled against Pudsey St Lawrence at Tofts Road. The absences of skipper David Syers - on football duty with Ossett Town - and overseas player Lorenzo Inghram didn't help their cause as they were dismissed for 149.

Opening batsman Alex Stead narrowly missed out on an opening day century for St Lawrence when he was trapped lbw by Yorkshire pacebowler James Lee on 96. It was one of three wickets for Lee at a cost of 57 runs.

Stead and Mark Robertshaw (62) shared an opening stand of 151, but after they parted wickets fell at regular intervals and a final score of 210-5 was a little bit short of expectations.

Gomersal, who were promoted from Division Two with Farsley at the end of last season, were another side in a spin.

Their new-look batting line-up was undone by teenage off spinner Smallwood who has been recruited by Baildon from Woodlands. Smallwood took five for 13 as Gomersal plunged to 85 all out to lose by 108 runs. Tabbi Bhatti had led the way with the bat for Baildon making 51 in their total of 193-8. Simon Webb gave him good support with 35.

A spinner of a greater vintage, Saltaire skipper Ijaz Khan, helped his side secure a surprise five-wicket win over East Bierley. Khan took four for 19 as East Bierley - without skipper Gavin Hamilton on ICC World Cup qualifying duty with Scotland, rugby playing Greg Wood and overseas player Mohammad Azhar Ullah - were dismissed for a paltry 122.

East Bierley looked as if they might escape the jaws of defeat when they reduced Saltaire to 69-5, but an unbroken partnership of 54 for the sixth wicket between Waleed Akhtar (33no) and Sajid Ali (22no) saw them secure their first win over East Bierley since they returned to the top flight in 2004.

Wily left arm spinner Glenn Roberts set title hopefuls Pudsey Congs on course for a comfortable six-wicket win at Yeadon. He took four for 46 as Yeadon were restricted to 160-7 in their 50 overs. Congs cruised to their victory with Andrew Bairstow hitting 12 fours in his 63 made off 67 balls. Opener Mark Gill finished unbeaten on 56.

A new signing and a former player returning to the club set up Manningham Mills for a 29-run win offer Hanging Heaton. Amjid Hussain marked his return by making 50 as his side made 150-9 as Robin Hill (3-41) and James Stansfield (3-42) bowled tidily.

When Hanging Heaton batted, Mills new recruit from Silsden Zeeshan Qasim took five for 29 as he and Adil Islam (5-48) bowled out the visitors for 121.

Division Two

Spen Victoria opener Matthew Speck hit the first century of the season as his side collected maximum points for a 96-run win over Great Horton.

Speck made an unbeaten 104, and innings which contained ten boundaries, and he shared in an opening stand of 108 with skipper Peter Jackson which set his side on course for a score of 226-4. Great Horton were dismissed for 130 in reply with new boy Matthew West taking three for 23.

There was drama at Morley where their match with Undercliffe ended in a tie. The league's all-time record runscorer Mark Gilliver made 72 as Undercliffe battle to 150-8 in the face of some good bowling from Nathan Bromby (4-32).

In reply Morley finished on 150-9 with Danny Lloyd (32) being their topscorer.New left arm spinner Chris Greenwood (3-25) and skipper James Clarke (3-30) were Undercliffe's best bowlers. Each side collected 11 points.

Former Undercliffe batsman Farakh Hussain made an impressive debut for Windhill. Hussain made 77 and helped his side to a 15-run win. New skipper Amjad Khan put in a brave all-round performance for Old Lane. He took five for 68 and top scored for his side with 35. Another newcomer to catch the eye was Old Lane's teenage fast bowling capture from Caribbean Mubtada Akthar. He took four for 19 he a fiery opening burst.

Hartshead Moor pulled off one of the best results of the day when they defeated Keighley by 43 runs. The new boys also caught the eye in this match. Australian Lachlan Hall made 40 on his debut and gave good support to Graham Hilton (45no) as Hartshead were dismissed for 172 and then off spinner Jonathan Gould - a new recruit from Liversedge - took four for 26 as Keighley were bowled out for 129.

There was no joy for either of the relegated clubs, Idle and Brighouse. Idle lost by 18 runs to Lightcliffe and Brighouse suffered a 63-run defeat against Bankfoot.

Former Bowling Old Lane skipper, Tahir Khan, top scored with 45 as Lightcliffe made 178-9 despite some fine bowling by Idle's new recruit Kurtis Whippey (3-49). Luke Heinemann (40) and Mahmood Rasool (36) battled hard for Idle but they eventually finished on 160-9.

Micky Hutchins made 64 and teenage debutant Edward Walmsley (49) as Bankfoot made 204-5 at Brighouse. Veteran seamer Greg Colehan followed up with four wickets as Brighouse - despite 36 from skipper Paul Cummins were dismissed for 141.
